Alex Somerville
I’m so happy to be able to bring the work of Alex to Guirao Design. Alex Somerville is a young artist who has collaborated with his well-known ceramist mother, Emily Myers, to make this range of hand-thrown and hand-decorated plates. Alex and Emily work together from their studio in Hampshire., which is the most beautiful setting in the countryside and the inspiration for much of his work. Encouraged from a young age to create and experiment with different materials, this collaboration comes from Alex and Emily’s mutual love of colour, ancient Greek vases, the pottery of the Bloomsbury Group and Matisse. Alex has a deep love of nature, which comes across in these playful, illustrative pieces. The plates are painted with underglaze colours, then fired at a high temperature for durability and finished with a transparent glaze. Alex is continuing his education and journey as an artist, and I’m so lucky to have seen him grow and develop in his practice. I have been struck throughout by the maturity in his work, the many layers with a drop dose of humour and cheerfulness that characterise his art( and him!).
